A baker is coming back to 1012 Edgewood Avenue S. Jacksonville Today described the old Edgewood Bakery as "long-gone — but still fondly remembered." In June, under a tent on that site, Community First Credit Union announced that its new Murray Hill branch would open there with Arble Baking Co. inside. Arble will sell sandwiches and the baked goods its family has been making for about 50 years.
That announcement fits a pattern on the street this year. The arrivals on Edgewood are coffee, breakfast tacos, pastries, Mediterranean plates and specialty coffee, plus two hair salons. They mostly fill the hours between sunrise and mid-afternoon. Evenings on the strip still come from the Murray Hill Theatre, the bars on the Murray Hill Preservation Association's weekly calendar, and one big October night.
The morning addresses, block by block
The changes are easiest to follow by address, heading south from the theatre end of the strip.
| Address | What's there | Status as of early October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 947 Edgewood Ave. S. | Former Hamburger Mary's | Closed in July 2026; space listed for lease |
| 1012 Edgewood Ave. S. | Community First Credit Union with Arble Baking Co. | Opening planned for late 2026 |
| 1152 Edgewood Ave. S. | Petra Cafe & Kitchen | Kitchen build-out permitted Sept. 17, 2026 |
| 1171 Edgewood Ave. S. | Calico Cactus | Website lists 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily |
| 1195 Edgewood Ave. S. | Foxtail Coffee Co. with Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream | Open since Oct. 20, 2025 |
| 1195 Edgewood Ave. S., No. 20 | Shear Perfection Hair Salon | Tenant build-out permitted |
Foxtail Coffee Co. sits at the south end. It opened at 1195 Edgewood on Oct. 20, 2025, with a Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream counter inside, so one stop covers a morning latte and an after-dinner scoop. The Winter Park-based chain has kept growing since then. In June 2026, the Florida Times-Union reported that Foxtail had opened its 10th Northeast Florida coffeehouse, at Lakewood Promenade on University Boulevard West.
Foxtail's building is getting busier, too. A September Jacksonville Daily Record permit roundup lists a tenant build-out for Shear Perfection Hair Salon at 1195 Edgewood Ave. S., No. 20. No opening date has been announced.
A few doors north, 1171 Edgewood changed hands from one breakfast spot to another. Maple Street Biscuit Co. closed there on June 15, 2025. Calico Cactus, founder Scott Moore's second location, planned a Dec. 20 soft opening and a Dec. 22 launch that winter. It's a fast-casual breakfast-and-lunch taco concept: soft tacos, chips and dips, salads and bowls, with tortillas and sauces made from scratch. Its Murray Hill page now lists 1171 Edgewood with hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Those hours make it one of the clearest examples of the daytime pattern. It has no dinner service at all.
Two arrivals still under construction
Arble Baking Co. at the old Edgewood Bakery
Arble's story begins across town. Willis and Veronica Anderson started baking and selling cookies from their Arlington home on Arble Drive in 1975. Their son Alonza Anderson co-founded Arble Baking Co. in 2020, and it opened a restaurant on Dunn Avenue in 2023. At the June announcement, Anderson put the Edgewood move in terms of the site's history.
"We definitely want to pay respect and homage to the legacy that is in place while really bringing to the table, a family that has been part of Jacksonville for three generations."
The Murray Hill location will offer baked goods, desserts, artisan sandwiches and catering favorites. Arble's project page says the opening is planned for late 2026 and asks visitors to follow along for a confirmed date. Community First's own release also says late 2026. According to Jacksonville Today, the plans include a community room and an outdoor social area along with the branch and the bakery counter. That would give the block a place to sit outside that isn't tied to a bar tab.
Petra Cafe & Kitchen at 1152
Petra Cafe & Kitchen was first reported as a plan for 1152 Edgewood Ave. S., with Mediterranean food, specialty coffee, and indoor and outdoor seating. In September it got a permit. The Daily Record's Sept. 21 roundup lists a $45,000 kitchen build-out by AEC Integrated, with permits issued Sept. 17, 2026. No opening date has been announced. A permitted kitchen does mean the project has moved past an announcement, and specialty coffee puts it in the same daytime lane as Foxtail and Arble.
The salon that moved down the street
The busiest Edgewood news this past week was a salon move. Steele Hair Gallery pulled a permit on Aug. 13, 2026 for a 2,060-square-foot, $100,000 tenant build-out on Edgewood Avenue S. In a Sept. 1 moving update, the salon said it was scheduled to open in its new home on Oct. 1. A Sept. 27 invitation set the grand-opening party for Saturday, October 3, 2026. The permit and the salon's invitation give different street numbers, so check the salon's own page before you book.
With Steele's move and Shear Perfection's build-out, two salon projects are underway on one short stretch. Like a coffee counter, a salon chair gets steady weekday traffic from people who live nearby.
The evening side of the street
One evening space closed this summer. Hamburger Mary's at 947 Edgewood Ave. S. closed in July. A sign on the door dated July 21, 2026 said it was permanently closed, and Jacksonville Today reported that the space was already listed for lease. The restaurant had opened at that address in the spring of 2025. Which business takes 947 next will shape the evening side of the strip.
Most of what happens on Edgewood after dark this fall runs through the Murray Hill Theatre at 932 Edgewood Ave. S. and the Murray Hill Preservation Association calendar. The theatre's posted lineup for the next two months:
- Saturday, Oct. 17: Disciple, with Ignescent, Kaliyl and Tricord
- Sunday, Oct. 25: a martial-arts seminar
- Saturday, Nov. 14: an EDM event
- Friday, Nov. 20: comedian Jeff Allen
- Saturday, Nov. 21: Russ Taff and Steve Taylor
- Sunday, Nov. 22: a film premiere
The theatre posts this as a live calendar, so check ticket details before you go.
The association's weekly listings, as posted for early October:
- Tuesdays, 4 to 11 p.m.: Doodle Night at The Fridge
- Wednesdays, 5 to 8 p.m.: food and community programming at Fishweir Brewing, 3438 Mayflower St.
- Wednesdays, 7 p.m.: trivia at The Fridge
- Oct. 10: the monthly community cleanup, meeting spot still to be announced
Murray Hill-O-Ween, Saturday, Oct. 24
Murray Hill-O-Ween is the one night this month that takes over the whole street. The association lists it for Oct. 24, 2026, with a block party and an after-dark Halloween parade along Edgewood Avenue, plus live music, food trucks, a pumpkin patch and children's activities. It falls the day before the theatre's Oct. 25 seminar and one week after the Disciple show, so the last two weekends of October are the busiest stretch on the strip this fall.
Getting to Edgewood from the north
If you come in from Riverside along Post Street, the drive has changed. The roundabout at Post Street and Old Roosevelt Boulevard opened to the public on Oct. 17, 2025, and News4JAX reported that FDOT finished it months ahead of schedule. The roundabout is part of a larger $6.5 million Post Street rail-safety and resurfacing project. In October 2025, WOKV reported the expected finish as mid-2026. FDOT's March 2025 open-house presentation said fall 2026. No published report yet confirms that the full resurfacing is done, so plan around possible lane work on Post Street through the fall.
Cyclists will also see a new protected bike lane on Edgewood Avenue, though it's farther north. The City of Jacksonville says the lanes it recently finished run from Susquehanna Street to just north of Beaver Street. More gaps need to be closed before they connect to bike facilities near Murray Hill.
Dates to watch through the end of 2026
- Arble Baking Co. and Community First's opening date at 1012 Edgewood, planned for late 2026
- An opening date for Petra Cafe & Kitchen at 1152 Edgewood, now that its kitchen permit is issued
- Shear Perfection Hair Salon's opening at 1195 Edgewood, No. 20
- A new tenant for 947 Edgewood
- Confirmation that the Post Street resurfacing is complete
If Arble and Petra both open on schedule, the stretch between 1012 and 1195 Edgewood will have a bakery, a Mediterranean cafe, a taco counter and a coffee shop. Calico Cactus is the only one of the four with posted hours so far, and it closes at 3 p.m.
When a new business opens on Edgewood, it changes how the blocks around it are used day to day. Sexton and Mock follows those changes as closely as the homes nearby. If you're thinking about what this year's Edgewood openings mean for your own house a few streets away, we'd be glad to talk it through with you.
